Students draw symbols using conte crayon and then build a stamp using foam and corrugated cardboard. Next, class 3-310 is ready to print!
The African stamps are made by carving gourds. Like so many artists in diverse cultures, we use the resources that are readily available to make our art . Here are Adinkra stamps from Ghana:
"My kindergarten students
created wood sculptures inspired by our activity during our last
meeting. I had two talking points. One was the idea of balance...if the
wood could balance without the glue, then their sculptures would be
strong when the glue dried. I positioned various wood pieces in
different ways and asked the children "Do you think that this will
balance?" I also talked about the idea of using a base in sculpture so
that students would build on their cardboard bases. This helped in that
we need to be able to lift the sculptures to a spot for drying before my
next class came in."

In this project, the materials teach the lesson. I only need to say a little and then I can step aside so that the students can have their experience. There was such an air of concentration and focus during this morning's painting session.
Don’t believe it if anyone tells you that first graders are too young for Shakespeare! Our first graders recently had a special opportunity to immerse themselves in Shakespeare when they met Shannon Whitt, the illustrator of a gorgeous picture book, Shakespeare’s Seasons, which uses excerpts from Shakespeare’s poetry and plays to introduce young readers to the bard’s writing. The kids were mesmerized by the poetry – and then they got to do their own paper and fabric collages inspired by some of the lines they heard.

As they started working, they could draw on some of Shannon’s secret collage tips – like a fool-proof way to make accordion-style grass from paper.

The kids worked from Shakespeare lines that focused on spring or summer. Some children zeroed in on the disappointments of the seasons – “The purest spring is not so free from mud” – and showed kids playing in soggy meadows, farmers getting stuck in their fields – and, in one case, a zombie stomping through mud! Others were captivated by a season’s promise of beauty – “Summer shall come and with her all delights” – and created landscapes with lots of flowers and butterflies.

Art class provides a unique opportunity for the kindergarten children to discover books in a different way than they do in their regular classrooms: as artistic inspiration. Reading a beautifully illustrated book to the kindergarten classes and focusing on how the story unfolds in pictures as well as words has been an exciting vehicle to launch new projects. Recently, the children explored the pages of Eric Carle’s A House for Hermit Crab and then made their own depictions of how a hermit crab would decorate a home.

Here’s how it worked: each child was given a separate rectangle showing a portion of a painting. They were to reproduce the image they were given using pastels on paper. The twist? The class didn’t see in advance what the original Van Gogh work looked like so they could only guess what each individual rectangle was depicting and what all the rectangles, when put together, would reveal.
They saw green pencils, combustion, and faces. They heard the title and saw planets. They made bold leaps at analysis. They cared more about their interpretations than about what the artist may have intended. They were animated!
This image leads well into having students create their own abstract art using a small collage element from a Rosenquist reproduction and masking tape to make lines (through removal). Looking intently at the Rosenquist and having the tape to manipulate lessens their questioning about the meaning of abstraction. 5th grade has gotten into this! Many have continued making abstract drawings as they have had waiting time during our casting project (casting post follows).Kelly Normand http://www.blogger.com/profile/18151504422100539512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864506491817974381.post-56706745275923404932011-11-27T14:18:00.000-08:002011-11-27T14:36:11.419-08:00Choice Time!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7m7YkXFprTcljUJPEgE4Wcb_aWNGFxcujZWwdSd9m0DxaQ4Q4vT0v7CEGAB9C4gL5u2edgZUqy8Zqyx-WtE3K0SpC4LtJCLALacTAGfI0TZv5bs_efzxUzbsT1bF5u-9BcVgzz3Hfg8aH/s320/choicetime_2861.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5679804962366572482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaOJLHGSSReZ4301wh6ziEqOL7GKowxzklZ_9GuBbZbw2DbkFKJOMmEqKAUXKuOiili3oYMsBSzkNJDsfXZhAMSVe0iPDSVi7CzIsxE45Pps3tuFBNRVLGdv1vKzKumo0olDGwchWoFFGq/s320/choicetime_2831.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5679804959621098722" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZGHssaXPzaW6Zb1zTBhjkoKCKweswryrgfzD4UTqb1T3xDnWJZbHzwEkuNwse76sPQfQk_zGMfdsKgqawVDYFilG7bI2-8LqjNFIrnHElstvhjtcjnRVebXZQg4Jf8S7ATG4UKLPyAr7_/s320/choicetime_2841.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5679804944619736770" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2stu-UBdF25FLdCMremYMXGX2CBOkOTiE9YbR3gxB2BYEDu0wTxUQEWGGwq1HNKZieRI_TfN7kyanAKGg7r5ISU41bn2XHkQ8Im2Kk3hYY3XmTu1lSwt-yYkflWB4vrLeEFs3SrAFWjqq/s320/choicetime_2851.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5679804948363807634" />
Many Kindergarten children tell me that choice time is their favorite part of art. In choice time, I set up the tables with different material options for self-directed creative play. I facilitate as the children negotiate what they will make with the materials presented. Choice time can be very social. I step into the role of teacher-observer. It gets loud as the children tell each other their ideas!
Recently, Ms. Hammond's 1st grade made it clear to me that they wanted to have choice time. They remembered it fondly from Kindergarten. We'd been working on projects since September and I hadn't scheduled in choice time yet. I promised them a choice time art class and here they are in all their glorious choice energy.Kelly Normand http://www.blogger.com/profile/18151504422100539512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864506491817974381.post-89944375008818496482011-11-27T14:00:00.000-08:002011-11-27T15:17:57.516-08:00The Shaw Memorial, 5th Grade<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv3R1LBG-Vs5ODZptx1JzsgtltiE80vMdEiLFyrDzoh70hSbC2L3vETlP-4IxVZli9KSiXyXKjUhG_ICor59Csc4lvS3lW97cGTTYL9q2QayKqEtxrW4FywyQd-AEX9pFrppZhkPkCYWX0/s320/casting_5th_2791.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5679802243572316770" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS0ZNeysnkZyfrOHv7Tmdxm36-K1g6wEikk1O32LX2sJMrNtD8tO8_2qvhW063so4JjwGzUgjFeUpWt_MOkL_qM_le5Pq0ke_4OUwZ20D-XvD6OyZ3n4BomtgYUVjytWs2LzM2VHAdv_JM/s320/casting_5th_2801.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5679802242979661474" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwJKgZESkhzdzyYCiGB6JYVaJzXuI8hZ238L-bd_5xWWFaDKop4kKVfoF8_HNELKDyBUjBO2oSYrjv8dsYt_3FV2aQPK2blOq1aaLki_LwajLPDFsfMahTUB6dlZpASYUuTemMvpM-7N1s/s320/Shaw+Memorial.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5679799381384133778" />

The 5th grade began this year analyzing Augustus St. Gaudens' Shaw Memorial, a public sculpture in Boston Common commemorating the Massachusetts 54th regiment. Students did an amazing job of deconstructing the meaning of the memorial through looking at it and using their experiences of seeing public sculpture to inform their analysis. We talked about what a memorial is and how a sculpture is cast. We talked about the Massachusetts 54th and the fight to end slavery.
Since then, we have been attempting to cast our own clay sculptures. We have had technical setbacks and I am so impressed with the patience and resolve I've witnessed! We're not done yet but here are a few pictures of our process...plaster molds that we made from plastilene originals and clay casts pressed into the molds.Kelly Normand http://www.blogger.com/profile/18151504422100539512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864506491817974381.post-3209959967669916632011-06-04T08:13:00.000-07:002011-06-09T20:13:48.977-07:00Rube Goldberg Inspired Animations

Our student teacher from Pratt, Alana Glantz brought this very cool project to the 4-303 art classroom. Ogres and benevolent power figures appeared in the art room. We used everything...papier mache, model magic, cardboard, feathers, bendaroos and more. Students had to figure out which materials would work best for their individual designs. When the designing and building was finished, 4th graders wrote imaginative profiles of the characters they created.
Now, I really want to visit Arizona in search of Hopi culture! They made books using drawing, stenciled patterns and collage. We talked about Hopi Kachinas and cosmological power in Native American art. Students noticed pattern on Zuni pottery. Some students got motivated when they discovered that figures woven into cloth reminded them of contemporary game characters because of the stylized geometry of their shapes.Kelly Normand http://www.blogger.com/profile/18151504422100539512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864506491817974381.post-82834935366922358812010-10-02T04:24:00.000-07:002010-10-02T04:33:41.843-07:00Three Grants FundedI'm happy to spread the news that three small materials grants through donorschoose.org that I wrote this summer have been fully funded.
Kindergarten and pre-K will be creating paintings and sculptures inspired by classic fairy tales, third grade will once again embark on making the Chinese warriors and fourth grade will look at Inuit drawings and Hopi kachinas for a painting and sculpting unit based on Native American art making practices. These grants help the entire school by augmenting the art budget.Kelly Normand http://www.blogger.com/profile/18151504422100539512noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864506491817974381.post-23510649051045453782010-09-17T15:39:00.000-07:002010-10-01T02:24:47.679-07:00Tap, tap, tap, spread, spread, spread...

...like putting jelly on some bread... This is the beginning of the rhyme I say when teaching the youngest students in our school about our glue brushes. Kindergarten started their collage unit with a reading of "It Looked Like Spilt Milk". They made torn paper collages using black and white papers. Next project, we'll move into color. Thank you to Suzie, Stella's Mom and an art educator colleague for some great tips and ideas, like tearing the paper behind my back and asking the children what action they think is making the sound that they hear.

Photos: Dmitry GubinKelly Normand http://www.blogger.com/profile/18151504422100539512noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864506491817974381.post-30697902414836289222010-09-09T06:45:00.000-07:002010-09-09T06:51:59.230-07:00Sshhhh.....
I've taught at PS 154 for four years now and have not shown my own art to my students or the school community. The simple act of placing a bike on top of a table generated huge excitement in the school. Before school, I would happen upon parents and their children standing in front of and speculating about the bike on the table. Jack, the custodian made a joke about it and Ms. Goldberg told me that I had "made the day" for her class and that the bike on the table was all they could talk about enroute to a field trip.

The 2nd, 4th and 5th grade students drew the bike. I demonstrated how to make a blind contour drawing and explained that artists, like athletes, often have ways to warm up before beginning a more involved project. I stressed that this was more about seeing than about making a perfect drawing.

We made three drawings-a blind contour drawing (5 min.), a drawing using one's non-dominant hand (5 min.) and a final drawing with the pencil held in the usual hand and the eyes making the usual measurements and judgements.

Starting off with exercises that insured that nobody's drawing was going to look "right" really helped. I heard quite a bit of laughter during the warm-ups and students spontaneously showed their work to friends sitting nearby.

For the final drawing, I insisted that the bike be drawn from observation but allowed imaginative elements to be introduced, as well. Elementary age students are capable of making exquisite drawings from observation but I believe the fun begins for them when they are free to invent.Kelly Normand http://www.blogger.com/profile/18151504422100539512noreply@blogger.com0
